Hinterm Nischel *2021
Chemnitz Open Space in cooperation with Kunstsammlung Chemnitz
mixed media installation / various dimensions
Immediately after the general election, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz will be showing the exhibition Hinterm Nischel curated by Kasper König and Annabell Burger in the Chemnitz Open Space. The event is intended as a concerted pop-up exhibition. For four days, seven artistic positions will be presented in the showroom in the ‘party saw’ behind the monumental Karl Marx head.
In Future Primitive, the artist reflects the ongoing transformation of socialist structures in Eastern Europe into neoliberal capitalism. Steinherz chooses grain, which traditionally refers to prosperity and abundance, as the material for her contemporary harvest crown and moulds it into a symbolic € sign. The work After the Storm combines a photograph of a damaged prefabricated building with the sculptural element of a crane, from which a new piece of façade floats down promisingly. It ironically refers to the optimistic saying ‘After the Storm, the Sun will Shine’ – and also questions a Western perspective on the socialist legacy.
